In this assignment, we were commissioned to introduce and mentor in a process for the rigorous capture and documentation of user requirements for a major new development.

The overview requirements summary was written, and appropriate methodology designed, use-case and other templates were delivered in 3 workshops. Our recommendation that we document the full requirements specification side-by-side with the client’s Business Analyst and other staff over an (elapsed) 11-week project was declined on grounds that the client felt the work could be taken in-house.
After 9 months the requirements specification was less than 50% complete. The project was abandoned when the company merged with a competitor. The competitor product was adopted as the way forward.
This project faltered when the client attempted to take the solution back in-house too quickly. The benefit of our working with the team and ‘show by doing’ was not realised.
